Sulfur
Sulfur is a nonmetallic chemical element that is solid, tasteless, brittle, bright yellow, poor conductor and insoluble in water. It belongs to the oxygen group. It is one of the most reactive elements, which can react with all metals except gold and platinum to make sulfides. It also makes compounds with several non-metallic elements.
Sulfur is one of the most important raw materials in the chemical industries, which is produced as a byproduct of production process such as oil refining, heavy oil and natural gas processing, and from coking and metallurgy factories.
This material is mainly used in many chemical and industrial processes, especially in the production of chemical fertilizers. In fact, about 50% of the sulfur production is used to make fertilizers in the world. Other sulfur uses include Medicinal, rubber, and cosmetics applications.
It is an internationally important commodity because of sulfur importance for industrial economies and its convenient transportation.
It is necessary to say that approximately up to 90-95% of recycled sulfur, is used for sulfuric acid production process, which has enormous usage in industries.
Sulfur production methods
- Sulfur production from elemental sulfur deposits
- Production of sulfur from H2S recovery
- Production of sulfur from Iron pyrite process
